What Alta snowmobile tours cost, ride by ride
A guided snowmobile tour from Alta costs from ~$284 per person for a four-hour evening or daytime ride up to ~$417 for a long ice fishing day on the plateau. Norway is not a cheap country, and these prices reflect it. Below, five tours side by side, then what the money covers and where the two booking sites differ.
Five tours in one table
The table holds the four tours on our home page plus one longer Æventyr route, each at its regular "from" price per person. The booking sites run their own offers now and then, so the figure on your dates can sit a little lower.
| Tour | From | Length | Group | Included | Who drives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alta Adventure, Finnmarksvidda safari (our pick) | ~$337 | 5 h | Up to 12 | Pickup; warm suit, boots, helmet; warm drinks and snacks | Drivers 18+; shared sled at this price, single driver costs more |
| Æventyr, northern lights by night | ~$284 | 4 h, evening | Up to 17 | Pickup and drop-off, thermal suit, shoes, gloves, helmet, coffee, tea, snacks | Class B license holders; pairs swap seats |
| Æventyr, daytime ride | ~$288 | 4 h | Up to 30 | Pickup, thermal suit, shoes, gloves, helmet, coffee, tea, locally made snacks | Class B license holders; pairs swap seats |
| Æventyr, ice fishing | ~$417 | 6.5 h | Up to 15 | Snowmobile, fishing gear, safety equipment, snacks, tea, coffee, transport to the start | Class B license holders; no under-12s |
| Æventyr, historical route (extra) | ~$352 | 6 h | Not stated | See the Viator listing | Class B license holders |
Most of these prices assume two people on one snowmobile. Only Alta Adventure sells a separate single-driver option, and it costs more than the shared seat in the table.
The two four-hour rides
The lowest prices belong to Æventyr's pair of short tours. The northern lights ride at ~$284 goes out in the evening, while the daytime ride at ~$288 runs in daylight from a mountain lodge in Gargia Valley.
Both last four hours, and both give you about two hours on the snowmobile. The rest goes on the transfer, getting into the thermal suit and the safety briefing, so the hourly figure for driving time is higher than it first looks.
The night ride scores 4.7 from 70+ reviews on GetYourGuide and 5.0 from 40+ on Viator. The daytime ride holds 4.9 from 70 reviews on GetYourGuide, but its groups reach 30, the largest of any tour here.
Five hours with Alta Adventure
Our pick, the Finnmarksvidda safari from ~$337, costs more than the four-hour rides and gives you an extra hour. The day crosses frozen lakes on the plateau, stops at a mountain cabin and caps the group at 12.
The quoted price is for a shared sled, which you can book only with a friend or family member. Travel alone and you need the single-driver option, which costs more. Our solo or shared guide walks through that choice.
Five hours on the plateau, group of 12
Alta Adventure picks you up in town and lends the warm suit and boots. Then it drives you out to frozen lakes and a mountain cabin with snacks on the way.
It scores 5.0 from 50+ reviews on GetYourGuide and 5.0 from 70 reviews on Viator. The catch is weight, because passengers over 75 kg (165 lb) cannot ride in the back, and that excludes many adults.
The long days
The dearest ticket is Æventyr's ice fishing day at ~$417. For 6.5 hours you ride up through the forest to a fishing spot on the plains, and if someone gets a bite, the guides cook the trout or char on the ice.
Fish are never promised, and the tour has only a handful of reviews so far. Our ice fishing guide covers the day and what to bring, since the listing does not mention a thermal suit.
A six-hour option is the historical route across the plateau at ~$352, which follows part of an old postal route. Its catch is plain, though. You can book it on Viator only, and it rests on just 8 reviews.
What the money buys
Every tour on our home page includes the guide and the snowmobile with its fuel. Each one also includes warm drinks and snacks along the way, which matters more than it sounds after an hour in the cold.
The three short and mid-length tours add pickup in Alta, and they lend a thermal suit with boots or shoes and a helmet. Alta Adventure also sends a list of wool layers to bring, which our what to wear guide expands on.

Prices in Norway run high across the board, from coffee to hotel rooms. A guided tour has to pay wages and fuel, and its machines sit idle all summer, which the ticket reflects.
GetYourGuide or Viator, two prices for one tour
The same tour can cost different amounts on the two sites. Viator asks more for both of Æventyr's four-hour rides, while it comes in cheaper for Alta Adventure's safari and for the ice fishing day.
GetYourGuide offers free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead on these listings. You can also reserve now and pay later there, which helps when the weather forecast for your week is still open.
Check both sites for your dates before you book. The gap shifts with offers, and the buttons on each tour lead straight to the listing.
Damage and the small print
None of the Alta listings publishes a damage figure or an insurance add-on. Alta Adventure asks the driver to sign a contract accepting responsibility for the snowmobile, so read those terms before you set off.
Ask the operator what the driver pays if the sled is damaged, and check whether your travel insurance covers snowmobile driving. It is a short email that can save an argument later.
The license rules behind that contract are in our guide to driving and licenses. If your budget allows one tour only, the northern lights guide helps you weigh the evening ride against a day on the plateau.
